About Arniston/Waenhuiskrans:

Arniston is a tranquil fishing village approx 210 km’s from Cape Town, on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. The village of Kassiesbaai boasts iconic white washed, thatched roof fishermans’ cottages.

The Arniston sank here in 1815, only 6 of the 378 passengers survived the disaster.

There are pristine white sandy beaches, dotted with rock pools to explore. Prehistoric fish traps made by the Khoisan strandlopers (beach walkers) still remain along the coastline.

These stone built enclosures trap fish at high tide.

Waenhuiskrans means wagon house cave, big enough to house a wagon and oxen.

De Hoop and Die Mond reserves flank Arniston.

Arniston cave/Waenhuiskrans (wagon house cave) – accessible only at low tide through a small opening beneath a rocky overhang.

Die Mond – a coastal nature reserve established in 1986, visitors can picnic along side the river and explore the hiking trails. It is a prime fishing spot.

De Hoop – is a World Heritage site, home to the Cape Floral Kingdom with an estimated 1500 species. You can also see the rare bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, yellow mongoose and over 260 species of birds. Great for whale watching from June – September. Beautiful hiking trails.

Shipwreck museum Bredasdorp – 22km’s away is full of treasurers such as figure heads, life boats, porcelain, anchors, old bottles and coins from shipwrecks such as the Arniston, Wafra, Maori and many more.

Cape Agulhas lighthouse – situated at the southernmost tip of Africa, was the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa in 1849, this is where the warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic Ocean meet. The light keepers house is now a museum and restaurant.

Cape Agulhas wine route (approx. 45 km’s from Arnsiton)– visit estates such as Black Oyster Catcher, The Berrio, Strandveld, Zoetendal and others for wine tastings.
